Looking After Your Jewellery
When attending Wedding and Craft Fairs, or just discussing our products with members of the public, the most common question we are asked, is why does my jewellery go black?
The scientific answer to this question is Oxidization! This is what happens to the metal when it is left exposed to the air for too long.
It will occur more quickly in gold and silver plated items, but will also happen to jewellery made in Sterling Silver. Silver polishing cloths will help bring the shine back to Sterling Silver (and sometimes silver plate) but oxidization is almost impossible to remove from gold plated items - in fact it's quite likely that the polishing cloth will cause even more damaged.

This little Sterling Silver piggy was left on a jacket hanging in a wardrobe and soon fell foul to the processes of oxidization! A silver polishing cloth and a little elbow grease soon restored it to it's full glory. However if we had followed our own advice, such vigorous polishing may not have been required!
The best suggestion we can make to ensure your jewellery stays free from oxidization is that you keep it a box - either its presentation box or a jewellery box - and avoid prolonged exposure to air.
We also recommend that you avoid direct contact with perfume, aftershave or other highly perfumed substances.
Simply apply your perfume, aftershave or body lotion, allow it to dry then put on your jewellery! This will avoid discolouration of both the metal and the beads!
