Tips on Choosing the Right Hair Accessories
We recognize that when buying from us, you may not always have the opportunity to try before you buy and that when buying what is probably your most important bridal accessory you probably need a little extra help and advice!
Here are some useful facts, which we hope will help you make this important choice. If you need any advice about choosing the perfect hair accessory for yourself or your bridesmaids, please ask and we'll always do our best to offer no obligation, unbiased advice.
Tiaras
All our tiaras are made on tiara bands, which are basically circular metal bands 3mm tall.
They sit naturally on the top of the head and while they have some flexibility in them, they do not grip the head.
For a secure and comfortable fit we would always recommend that the hair is dressed around the tiara, holding it in place. This does not have to be a very formal or rigid 'up do' - just enough hair is needed to keep the band safely in place - as shown here.
More information and pictures of all our tiara designs can be seen on our Tiara gallery pages.
Alice Bands
A more secure fit than the tiara, the alice band sits safely and comfortably around the head (fitting from ear to ear) and is therefore ideal for those who have shorter hair or simply want the confidence of a secure hair accessory.
We would not usually recommend an alice band for those of you who wish to wear your hair up, unless the alice band is put in place first and the hair dressed (loosely, we suggest) around it, covering the band. Please also bear in mind the band sticks out slightly at the bottom, so extra care is needed to cover this and make sure the band doesn't poke through! Partially dressing the hair around the band is usually fine - as shown here, below.
If considering an alice band for yourself or a bridesmaid, it is worth noting that alice bands are not really a good choice for glasses wearers, as the band can get entangled with the arm of the glasses!
Alice bands are however, often a very good choice for your littlest bridesmaids as they easily replaced if they are accidentally dislodged!
Pictures of all the bridal alice bands we offer can be seen on the alice band gallery page.
Combs
A versatile option, the comb can be worn in the hair or stitched to your veil. They are comfortable to wear and feel very secure when in place.
At SilverTree Jewellery Design we use 2 different sizes of clear plastic comb - a 70mm length, which is perfect to add just a little detail or for smaller bridesmaids and a 100mm long comb - ideal for veils or to decorate french pleats. Both sizes can be used to hold back the hair - as shown here.
For more information on our hair combs, including pictures, please see our Hair Accessories page.
Grips and Pins
Grips and pins can offer a less formal option for those of you who do not want to wear a tiara or veil, but would still like some sparkle and detail.
Pins can only be worn in dressed hair and can also be worn with your tiara and veil - adding interest and detail, especially if you want to remove your veil for the evening reception.
Hair grips are perfect for undressed hair, very straight or short hair and multiple grips clustered together can be very striking in hair that may otherwise be difficult to decorate.
In addition to our standard grips and pins, we also offer pin BGP4, which is specially designed for plaits. For more information on this very special pin and all our bridal pins and grips, please visit our Hair Accessories gallery.
Hairslides/Barrettes
Hairslides (also known as barrettes) are the perfect no fuss solution.
They slip easily into 'half-dressed' hair and are simple to replace if they become dislodged or the hair style needs refreshing.
Spring loaded, they are easy to use and don't always need the help of a qualified hairdresser to put in place.
We also offered a second, very specialised type of hairslide - a ponytail clip.
As the name suggests these slides are designed specifically to secure and decorate a pony tail. They are easy and comfortable to wear and are the perfect choice for ladies with long hair who want a little decoration with minimum fuss.
If you are able to tie your hair in a ponytail, then these clips are suitable for you.
Details and pictures of the hair slides we offer can be found on our Hair Accessories page.
