How do I Measure and Fit My Jewellery?
Below is information on how to measure necklaces and bracelets to get the perfect fit.
We've also told you how we measure our bridal jewellery so you know how long our earrings and pendants are, where the drops on our necklaces sit, how tall our tiaras are and how wide or tall the alice bands are. From these measurements, plus the pictures we have included on the site, you should get a good idea of how your bridal jewellery will look when it arrives!
We have also given you some tips on how to wear the jewellery on your wedding day and what to consider when choosing your bridal jewellery.
For more inspiration, you might want to take a look at our series of articles on choosing wedding jewellery and hair accessories.
Necklaces
Most of our necklaces are not made in a 'standard size' as the length is dictated by the design of the piece. When ordering one of our necklaces, we suggest you take a tight measurement round your neck as shown in this picture. We will then add the required number of inches/centimetres to achieve the perfect fit.
Please don't assume the size you need based on the length of a necklace you already own - using our technique will ensure the necklace fits exactly how we have designed it and looks perfect on your wedding day!
Any drops are measured from the point where the drop joins the main body of the necklace to the end of the drop. The drop on most necklaces is the same regardless of neck size - if your neck measurement is correct, then the drop length will be perfect too and not disappear into your cleavage!
Neck Chains
Like bracelets, the length of a chain is a very subjective thing and the best suggestion we can make is use a chain you already own and feel comfortable wearing as a guide when ordering one of our pendants. However, if you need to work out what chain length is suitable when ordering one of our pendants, we suggest you measure your neck as, suggested above, and add about 4 inches (10cms) to the length. Remember - our standard lengths are 16 or 18 inches (41 or 46 cms), but we can custom make to order smaller or longer chains.
If you need a snake chain or choker wire (as used in for example pendant BP10), then a smaller size chain is required and you should only add 2 inches (5cms) to your neck measurement. Custom sized choker wires can be made to order.
Bracelets

Bracelet fittings are a very subjective thing! Some people prefer to wear them fairly tight around their wrist, while some like a looser fit.
When ordering one of our bracelets for your wedding day, the best advice we can give is measure a bracelet you already have and feel comfortable wearing.
Alternatively, measure your wrist tightly as shown in the picture and add 1 inch (2.5cms). This will give a comfortable fit.
Earrings
We measure all our earrings from the point the earring fits into the ear to the end of the drop - as shown in the picture here.
In the case of stud earrings, we measure the width of the setting.
Add approximately 5mm to the length if choosing clips or screw fittings for non-pierced ears.
Tiaras
The height of all our tiaras is measured from the bottom of the base (closest to the head) to the top of the tiara.
All the tiaras supplied by SilverTree Jewellery Design are made on round crown bases (for a picture of an undecorated band, please see our article on Tips on Choosing the Right Hair Accessory).
These tiaras bands CANNOT be worn in undressed hair - the hair MUST be dressed around them to hold them in place - as shown in these pictures.
This does not mean however you need a formal 'up-do'. As you can see in the picture to the right, the hair is worn long, with just the sides taken up around the tiara band to hold it safely - but comfortably - in place.
The best piece of advice we can give is, before buying a tiara - from anyone - think carefully how you are going to wear your hair on your wedding day - better still talk to your hairdresser first. We've heard many tales from hairdressers who have found it impossible to fit tiaras because they have been unsuitable for the bride's hairstyle. We hasten to add none of these tiaras were ours - in fact we would rather loose a sale than sell a tiara that couldn't be worn!
Alice Bands
Alice bands fit very tight to the head, following its natural contours. All measurements use the band as the starting point.
Of all the hair accessories we supply, our alice bands are the simplest to fit and wear. They can easily be slipped on the head for a comfortable and secure fit - making them ideal for even the littlest bridesmaid (who may be tempted to remove them during the day!)
They are ideal for brides with short/medium length hair, hair that is quite fine or for those of you who don't want an 'up-do' for your wedding day.
Our article, Tips on Choosing the Right Hair Accessory, shows a picture of an un-decorated alice band.
Hairslides/Barrettes
Barrette style hairslides are the perfect choice for your bridesmaids - especially older ones who may not want a full 'up-do' for the wedding.
The slides we use slip easily into half dressed hair and by carefully choosing the beads you use, you can achieve maximum impact with minimum fuss. The slides have the advantage of being relatively easy to replace.
The smallest (60mm) barrette can even be worn on the side of undressed hair (we wouldn't recommend this for the 80mm and 100mm slides as they would stand too proud from the head).
A picture of an un-decorated hairslide can be seen in our article on Tips on Choosing the Right Hair Accessory.
Bead Sizes
We mainly use 4mm, 6mm, 8mm and 10mm beads in our jewellery and this measurement always represents the widest/longest part of the bead (if there is such a thing in a round object!)
Any doubts over the size of the beads, just let us know and we'll send a sample.
